Stooping Pines

York County, South Carolina

WORK IN PROGRESS!

House built by John Darwin 2.8, circa 1801. We currently speculate (but have not yet confirmed) that the site was acquired in the 1801: Thomasson - Darwin Land Deed.

The house, which is still standing near Smyrna S.C. in a corner of York County known locally as Stooping Pines, is described in The Yorkville Enquirer (3 July 1985), which it claims was built in 1801 by John Darwin. The property is also included in the York County Historical and Architectural Survey (1992), under the reference 269/1023, but has not yet been surveyed in detail (pending a grant).

The preliminary survey describes the architectural style as "central hallway," lists contemporary outbuildings of note as the barn and a "large mill wheel on site behind barn" and indicates that the window panes appear to be original. We have established the house remained in the Darwin family until sometime after 1910, although a title search shows that some of the details in the newspaper are incorrect. However, we believe it reasonable to assume John Darwin's family was indeed living in this home from 1801, as claimed.
