WORK IN PROGRESS!
The knot of Sandlin families in York District SC at the turn of the 19th century is complex and not currently well-understood. This page is an attempt to gather together the various pieces of the puzzle rather than present a final picture.
Hart Genealogy
The following pedigree, from the Hart Genealogy, was our original point of departure. We are now convinced this cannot be quite right as it stands, and probably collapses individuals from two generations into one
Generation 1
William Sandlin (?- 1798) and Massey (maiden name unknown)
Generation 2
Randall Sandlin (?- ca. 1806) and Mourning (maiden name unknown) (?-1822)
Generation 3
(1) Polly Sandlin (2) Leodica ("Dicey") Sandlin (3) Randolph Sandlin (4) Littleton Sandlin (5) Jenny Sandlin
Our supposition was, in the absence of documented dates, that the Jenny Sandlin of Generation 3 was our Gilly Sandlin (1801-1870). But the identification of JENNY with GILLY now appears incorrect, particularly when checked against (infuriatingly unsourced!) notes of ancestry.com's 'One World Tree'
Randolph Sandlin M abt 1775 in De Kalb, Tennessee
Leodicia Sandlin F Jun 1778 in South Carolina Littleton Bland Sandlin M 1780 in York, South Carolina Polly Sandlin F abt 1782 in North Carolina, USA Jenny Sandlin F abt 1788 in North Carolina, USA
If this account is approximately correct, then the 'Littleton Sandlin' here is more likely to be Gilly's father than her sibling. From a similar (and as yet unverified) source as above, he is said to have married (in 1803) one Sarah Childers (1784-1869), or one Sarah Kennedy, who bore the following children:
(1) Gillie Sandlin (Feb 1801-1870), married John Bland Darwin 3.33
(2) Jesse Littleton Sandlin (Dec 1801-1863) (3) Randolph Sandlin (1806-1887) (4) Jonathan "Junk" Sandlin (ca. 1811-1876) (5) Daniel Sandlin (1813-1894) (6) Alfred Sandlin (1821-1894) (7) Minerva Sandlin (1832-?) (8) Sherrod Sandlin (?-?)
The version of the name as "Littleton Bland Sandlin" appears sound, as the name in that form persists in later (well documented) Sandlin generations, although it is not clear when and how the name 'Bland' entered the line. It is highly suggestive that John B. Darwin and Gillie Sandlin may have been cousins of some degree.
The naming of John B. Darwin and Gilly (Sandlin) Darwin's children may be significant. Their first son, John W., may have been named for John B.'s father as well as for himself, and their second son, Littleton Bland Darwin, perhaps named for Gilly's father (rather than a favourite brother, as we had previously assumed). Among their daughters are a Jane and a Sarah, perhaps representing their grandmothers' names. But this is, so far, conjectural.
As for the parents of Littleton Bland Sandlin, ancestry.com offers the following (unverified) consensus:
Randolph "Randal" Sandlin (b. ca. 1755, Bute County NC, d. 20 September 1806, York County, SC), son of John Sandlin of Goochland VA and Elizabeth Frances (unknown); married Mourining Green (b. ca. 1765)
Federal Census Returns
As Census returns pre-1850 only name the householder, they are of limited use in identifying family relationships. The following Sandlin heads of family are identified in these early returns for York District, SC:
1790
John Sandlin Nicholas Sandlin
1800
John Sandlin John Sandlin Jonathan Sandlin Lewis Sandlin Littleton Sandlin Randolph Sandlin William Sandlin
1810
This is the only Census in which Gilly (born 1801) would be counted in a Sandlin household; in 1820, she is counted in the household of her husband, John B. Darwin. There are six Sandlin households in 1810 in York, ennumerated as follows:
Families of James, Littleton, Randal and Nicholas all have counts in Column F (Females aged 0-10)
